Artist Statement

Beyond resemblance

I don't paint people. I borrow faces — faces that belong to no one — and take them apart until something of mine surfaces. I'm not after likeness. A face that only resembles someone says nothing; I'm looking for what's underneath it.

I work in layers, burying and recovering, until the image sits somewhere between appearance and collapse. That's where it starts to feel true. The face is the vehicle, never the subject.

Biography:

Diego Serrano is a Spanish painter based between Lleida and Barcelona.

After more than two decades working across design, technology and entrepreneurship, he returned his full attention to painting as a space for reflection, observation and personal inquiry.

His work begins with the human face — not as a portrait of anyone, but as a borrowed surface he takes apart to reach something more personal. The resulting images move between appearance and dissolution, inviting a slower, more intuitive way of looking.
